ABOUT JAMPEG

The Japanese Association of Mineralogists, Petrologists, and Economic Geologists was established in 1928, in order to further the diffusion and progression of the fields of mineralogy, petrology and economic geology and various other related scientific fields.

In Japan at that time the trend in geologic research was moving to use more physical and chemical methods, rather than just purely geological methods.  Dr. Toshisuke Kouzu was one of the leading researchers using these new methods, and also played a central role in founding this society by recruiting colleagues from these various fields, who at the time were engaged in a great amount of pioneering research.  In the 76 years since our founding, our association has published other materials, in addition to our normal journal; held annual meetings and cosponsored various conferences and symposiums; awarded grants to young workers for new and creative research, as well as monetary prizes to other researchers for breakthroughs in their fields; and publicly commended great achievements in our fields.

Our societyfs previous journal, The Journal of Mineralogy, Petrology and Economic Geology, had its first monthly issue published by JAMPEG in 1929, and continued to be published until March of 2000. This journal received several foreign contributions, and among domestically published journals on earth sciences, ours was one of the most cited internationally.  This journal also greatly contributed to the advancement of petrology, mineralogy, economic geology, and related fields.  However, in recent years the new chemical and physical methods of studying various earth science fields, such as solid earth sciences, planetary sciences, and meteor geology have been expanding remarkably to complement the original geologic methods.  In order to better integrate into this newly emerging environment, in April of 2000 JAMPEG joined with MSJ (The Mineralogical Society of Japan) to publish the English language Journal of Mineralogical and Petrological Sciences(JMPS), and the Japanese language Japanese Magazine of Mineralogical and Petrological Sciences.  These journals are expected to contribute substantial clarifications about basic problems inherent in these fields, as well as attempt to reconcile the increased specialization and subdivision that has occurred in these fields.

This society has been working to further the aim of building and expanding relations between these various scientific fields through publishing papers about the origins and processes of various phenomena in these fields.  From now on our association will be expanding to include those from as diverse an array of fields as possible. If you feel that the aims of our society would be valuable to your work,  please contact our societyfs secretariat.
